Three Things: Holistic Health Habits
Something I want to start sharing more about are the various products, services, healing modalities and holistic living habits that I use or am testing in my own life so you can benefit from them as well. If you follow me on Instagram (@megansherer) then you know that I often post about these things in my stories, but here on the blog I can go a little more in-depth and tell you why I’m trying or loving these products.
*Disclaimer: none of these posts are sponsored ads. I am simply sharing things with you that I use and love. Some of these companies will send me free or discounted products on occasion, but I won’t share anything with you that I don’t personally use and believe in.
1. Essential Oils: I cannot say enough good things about incorporating essential oils into your daily routine. A few of their incredible health benefits include: reducing muscle soreness; promoting relaxation and stress relief; reducing cold/flu symptoms; healing skin conditions; balancing hormones; improving digestion; and so much more. Plus, they smell amazing! A few of my favorites (highlighted in this photo) are lemongrass, frankincense, and tangerine. There are lots of ways to use essential oils, but my favorite is good old faithful...diffusing them. This is my bluetooth oil diffuser from ArtNaturals, which I love because it also acts as a speaker (perfect for playing white noise at bedtime) and an alarm clock. I will do a longer post in the future with the specific benefits of each oil and how it can improve your health and wellbeing as well as different ways to use them.
2. Succulents: The healing power of plants is real you guys. Growing up we always had plants around because both of my parents loved to garden, and I lived in the Pacific Northwest (it’s insane how green it is there). But I never felt like I inherited the green thumb, as I’ve never been great at keeping plants alive. Cue succulents. These little beauties are not only adorable, but they are very easy to keep alive since they’re used to living in desert conditions so they make a great first plant. And on top of that - just having them in your space provides some incredible health benefits! Most notably - they improve the air quality in your home. When you breathe, you inhale oxygen and you exhale carbon dioxide. Plants do the opposite. They absorb the carbon dioxide in the air and emit oxygen (aka photosynthesis), which makes it easier for you to breathe more deeply. What’s special about succulents is that while most plants stop the process of photosynthesis at night, succulents continue it which means you’re getting that much more oxygen while you sleep. PLUS they are also great at purifying the air by pulling toxins out of it and into their soil. Finally, studies have also shown that having plants around can sharpen your focus and improve your cognitive abilities. So I can safely say I will continue to plant lots of these little babies around my new apartment!
3. Collagen: My third and final thing that I am loving for this week is collagen. Whether you’ve heard of collagen before or not, you will soon because it is becoming increasingly popular in nutrition circles. So is it worth all the hype? In short, yes. Collagen is the vital building block of our bodies including skin, hair, nails, bones, and joints. Our bodies cannot synthesize enough collagen on their own and most people’s diets today contain minimal amounts of collagen. Supplementing with collagen can improve joint health, bone strength, athletic performance, digestive health, promote deeper sleep and glowing skin. Personally I have been dramatically reducing my animal-product intake and gravitating towards a more plant-based diet lately (for multiple reasons which I will cover in another post). When I do consume animal products it is important to me that they are incredibly high-quality. I love Vital Proteins because their products are natural, minimally-processed and clean label. They offer both marine and bovine collagen sources. A couple of my favorites are their Vanilla Coconut Collagen Peptides (which I often blend into my morning smoothies) and their Lavender Lemon Collagen Beauty Water, which also includes hyaluronic acid and probiotics. I have been incorporating collagen consistently for a couple months now, and have never felt better!
It’s important to note that everyone is different, and what works well for one person may not for another, especially when it comes to health. That’s why it’s so valuable to learn to get in tune with your unique body’s needs.
